Summer is a cruel time when you are living in India but not everywhere in India though. If you are in the mood to plan a summer vacation, this is your chance to go to the coolest place of our diverse country. Shillong is the place you should visit this summer and trust me, this trip always be close to your heart.
Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya. It is a city filled hills covered with pine trees, thus, the climate is automatically quite chill than the rest of the India. This is known as the ‘Scotland of East’, so you should make a wise decision right?
1. Part of Seven Sisters state
The Seven Sister states are in anyway something which is extremely under-rated and there is so much to explore. From Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, all of North Eastern India is pretty much untouched and unexplored, this is your time to break the clutter.
2. Find the rarest yet friendliest tribes
The predominant population of the city is of Khasi tribe and they are mostly Christian but you will find a mix breed in the area. There are significant amount of Assamese, Bengali and Nepali minorities in the city.
3. Don Bosco Centre For Indigenous Culture
This is 3-in-1 institution which is a museum, research centre and publication centre too. The institution showcases the rich community and culture of North East India. There is a unique blend of traditions and lifestyles which you will find nowhere in India otherwise.
4. The Living Root Bridges
Preserved as the UNESCO heritage site, this bridge resides deep inside the dense tropical forests of Meghalaya. This bridge is created by the roots of ancient rubber trees or Ficus Elastica. The weirdest and most interesting part is that the roots have been trained to grow itself into a tangled mess by the Khasi tribesmen. Can you imagine?
5. Numerous waterfalls
Since Meghalaya is also famous for Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, there has to be many waterfall around. Nohkalikai Falls or Sweet Falls and Elephant Falls are the most famous amongst many of its waterfalls.
6. Mawlynnong , Asia’s Cleanest Village
Last but not the end of the reasons, this village is also referred to as ‘God’s own garden. Located in East Khasi Hills, not only is it just known for cleanliness but the picturesque beauty is a vision.
