Depression is a state of mind in which people stop thinking beyond a certain level, which leads to stress and anxiety. In simple terms, we can say that depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in day to day life activities. The most common reasons behind the recent suicides occurred in the college campuses are depression and stress.
There have been instances in the past when students have committed suicide because of depression. One of the most famous institutes of India, IIT Kharagpur, has been in news for no good reason. It is because three students of IIT-Kharagpur have committed suicide this year. The students of IIT Kharagpur and premier colleges have a lot of pressure regarding studies and marks which straight away lead to depression and stress.
Colleges are trying their best to tackle the problem and IIT Kharagpur has come up with a unique idea to tackle depression among students. The idea is to have scheduled power cuts in the evenings for an hour so that students come out from their rooms and talk to each other. This will help them to reduce stress and anxiety by sharing their thoughts and problems among them.
According to Hindustan Times, a faculty member said “Students are meeting increasingly less. This naturally creates a lot of problems as they end up being alone. This small step will help them connect when they take a 10-minute coffee or tea break,”
We hope that every institute in the country shall come up with such unique ideas to tackle depression, which might prove essential in reducing the number of suicides amongst students in the country.
