The #MeTooIndia Movement have really left the country wonder and reassess a lot of things. India already knew that things were bad but some of the names which have come across as the sexual predators and even worse, rape have really shaken up our judgements. Names like Alok Nath, Sajid Khan, Rajat Kapoor, Subhash Ghai, Abhijeet Bhattacharya and the list is endless have really left us wonder whether we should really look upto anyone in the showbiz!
With so many allegations coming up with so many women every passing day is horrifying and what has the industry really done right now? Only MAMI have scrapped two of the films from Rajat Kapoor and AIB’s two founding members, Tanmay Bhatt and Gursimran Khamba have stepped down from the company. Other than these two things, have anything solid really come of it in last two week?
In the wake of such situation, the Women Filmmakers of India - Alankrita Srivastava, Gauri Shinde, Kiran Rao, Meghna Gulzar, Nandita Das, Nitya Mehra, Reema Kagti, Ruchi Narayan, Shonali Bose and lastly, Zoya Akhtar have issued a statement. The statement says that “We also have taken a stand to not to work with proven offenders.”
Now the thing is, we all know how the judiciary system works in India, it takes decades and more to give a hearing to a case. Not sure, whom to blame but when the statement says “proven offenders”, who will prove? The women sharing their stories do not have proof and the court have not taken any steps, so till the offenders are not proven will the Bollywood industry continue working with the creep?
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="und" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/metooindia?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#metooindia</a> <a href="https://t.co/19a6Duj6IR">pic.twitter.com/19a6Duj6IR</a></p>— Konkona Sensharma (@konkonas) <a href="https://twitter.com/konkonas/status/1051338971811180544?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 14, 2018</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Ofcourse the #MeToo Movement have consequences that many will come up with fake stories and get their revenge but amongst 98 of creeps working amongst the industry, 2 fake stories is not enough to say ‘proven offenders, is it? What about the cause of the movement?
After the allegations of sexual harassment towards Sajid Khan, Akshay Kumar have stopped the production of his film, Housefull 4. Next we hear the news that Sajid Khan has been replaced as the director of the movie by Farhad Samji. Also, Nana Patekar has been replaced. Do we really need a movie which provokes sexual offenders? Is this really necessary to make such kind of films?
This is the Catch-22 situation India has always been working on and this movement is also going to be wasted if the industry behaves like this in such an important phase of change! How can someone prove sexual harassment and misconduct? Are the predators going to behave like a creep infront of other? Is everyone supposed to record everything on phone 24*7?
