Nature is great and it can give us stories that seem astounding. One such story is flowing these days where an oak tree has its own ownership and it also owns the 8 feet ground that surrounds it. This tree is situated in Athens, Georgia.
There is a legend associated with this tree. People say that this tree was planted and granted an ownership by William H. Jackson in the early 1800s. It is said that William loved this tree a lot and to pay it some respect, he did this deed. There is this board that is placed near the tree, the text on the board reads: “For and in consideration of the great love I bear this tree and the great desire I have for its protection, for all time, I convey entire possession of itself and all land within eight feet of the tree on all sides.”
Though there is no official paper still people of Athens respect the nature and its components, so never of them has made any objection, as of now.
But, the original tree was destroyed in a windstorm in 1942, this new tree is made using one of the acorns of the old tree and thus it was given a new name: ‘The Son Of The Tree That Owns Itself.’
According to today’s law, it’s impossible for a tree to hold property, so it’s up to the city and it’s citizens to protect the oak.
Now, as the news went viral, people at Tumblr got in action to spread the word.
And this is how people reacted:
